Bunions may be main reason behind podiatrist visits

A Gloucester Times article has reported that Americans are most likely to schedule an appointment with the podiatrist to treat their bunions.

Bunions may be main reason behind podiatrist visits Bunions have the ability to cause pain, immobility and embarrassment. So it may be no wonder that the bony deformity appears to be the main reason behind podiatry office visits, according to Gloucester Times.

The news source reported that bunions affect 44 percent of women and 30 percent of men at some point in their lives.

The writer, physical therapist Joe DiVincenzo, also said that bunions have a tendency to advance, sometimes leading to surgery if pain and lack of movement at the big toe joint become severe.

"Expect a slow recovery - it could take up to a few months before you feel fully recovered," the expert said.

The Mayo Clinic has reported that there are several ways to treat bunions without surgery, such as using orthotics or changing shoes. Frequent wearers of high heels should know that the footwear has a tendency to exacerbate bunions or hammer toe.

Additionally, bunion splints have been shown to effectively prevent or treat bunions for users, which may help them avoid a painful bunion surgery
