Toe pain should be examined early on

While painful and sometimes embarrassing, deformities of the toes can often be treated effectively.

Toe pain should be examined early on An article that was recently published in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reported that an early check-up on foot pain and toe deformities can make all the difference in how easily the problem can be treated.

"When it hurts to walk, that person will start decreasing time spent on activities they enjoy. If the initial problem is not treated, it may lead to further issues such as skin infections, deformities, and muscular problems," said lead author Khalid Shirzad, M.D.

The article stated that toe problems - like bunions, hammer toe and crossover toes - can be caused by improper footwear, genetics, arthritis, injury and neuromuscular and metabolic diseases.

The experts reported that such issues should be treated with conservative methods before an individual turns to surgery.

Additional research and testimony has suggested that bunion splints or orthotics may be helpful in alleviating pain and deformity stemming from bunions or hammer toe. Such devices could allow individuals to avoid painful, costly bunion surgery
