Pregnant celebrities can suffer from foot problems

New mom Penelope Cruz sparkles at 2011 Oscars

Penelope Cruz at OscarsJust one month ago actress Penelope Cruz gave birth to her son, Leo Encinas Cruz, but she still looked amazing and energized at the 2011 Oscars, which she attended with husband and award nominee Javier Bardem.

Bardem lost his bid for best actor, but Cruz may have won for best dressed of the evening in her burgundy bejeweled L'Wren Scott gown.

The 36-year-old actress sported some Jimmy Choo heels to match the sparkling gown. While she looked as glamorous as any of the young, childless actresses on the red carpet, Cruz may be suffering from bunions or hammer toe as both heels and pregnancy have been known to lead to these conditions.

More than mere foot pain, bunions and hammer toe develop when excessive pressure is put on the ball of the foot, causing bone deformities.

Wearing a splint during pregnancy helps avoid foot problems

Cruz may not need to take time off from baby Leo, however, as bunion splints or orthotics may be effective at correcting early stage bunion or hammer toe without the need for surgery, according to some podiatrists.
