Anti-inflammatory foods may help ease bunion pain

Many foods contain compounds or chemicals that reduce inflammation in the body, which may be beneficial to those with bunions.

However, it also has implications for individuals with bunions, since it has been linked to bunion-causing arthritis as well as bursitis.

While non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may temporarily relieve inflammation and pain, a better solution may be to change a diet, according to Andrew Weil, M.D.

"Learning how specific foods influence the inflammatory process is the best strategy for containing it and reducing long-term disease risks," Weil said on his website, DrWeil.com.

An anti-inflammatory diet follows conventional wisdom in that it restricts fat and simple carbohydrates in favor of nutrient-dense fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Weil also recommends ginger and turmeric for their natural ability to reduce inflammation.

CNN Health reports that when the fluid sac that cushions a bunion becomes inflamed, it is known as bursitis and can increase foot pain.

Anther way individuals can help prevent or reduce the appearance of bunions without the use of pharmaceuticals or surgery is by using bunion splints or orthotics. The devices have been shown to be effective in alleviating the bony deformity by providing support to the metatarsal bones.
